FAQs

Remember, these FAQs provide general information and should not substitute personalised advice from TIE Counselling.

If you have specific concerns or questions, it is recommended to consult with us so we can assess your unique situation.

What conditions/issues do you work with?

CBT focuses predominantly on anxiety and depression disorders: PTSD, OCD, Generalised Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Specific Phobias, Body Dysmorphia, Health Anxiety and Depression. CBT can also be useful for Perfectionism and Low Self Esteem. With Counselling, people come for all different reasons and there doesn’t need to be a specific ‘disorder’ to focus on.

What approaches do you use?

I am an Integrative Therapist which means that I have been trained in a number of theories and models. My core training has been in: CBT, Gestalt, Solution Focused, Person Centered, Body Process and Transpersonal. I have also undertaken extra training for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

What can I expect from a counselling session?

During a counselling session, you can expect a non-judgmental and empathetic environment where you can freely express yourself. I will actively listen, ask questions, and provide support and guidance. The sessions may involve talking, reflection, exploration of emotions, and the use of various therapeutic techniques, depending on your needs and goals.

Will I need 50 or 90 minute session?

All sessions are 50 minutes long. There are some occasions where NICE guidelines recommend a 90 minute session, but this will be discussed beforehand. If you would like to opt for a 90 minute walk and talk session this is possible to allow for greater time in nature.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of counselling. Information shared during counselling sessions is kept confidential, except in situations where : except in situations where there is a risk of serious harm to you or others, or a crime is disclosed. I will explain the confidentiality policy during your initial session

Can I receive counselling online?

Yes, online counselling is becoming increasingly popular and accessible. There is research to show it is just as beneficial as face to face therapy!

How often do I need to come?

Initially it is recommended, and most effective, to come to therapy on a weekly basis. This allows time for a relationship to be built with the therapist, as well as new skills to be acquired.

Do I have to sign up to a set number of sessions?

No, sessions happen on a weekly basis and you book as you go. You are able to stop therapy at any time.

Do I need to be physically fit to participate in Walk and Talk Therapy?

Walk and Talk Therapy sessions are tailored to each individual's needs and abilities. The pace and duration of the walk can be adjusted to accommodate varying fitness levels. It's more about being present in nature and engaging in the therapeutic process rather than focusing on the physical aspect of walking. The paths we use are also accessible to those with mobility impairment.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It aims to identify and challenge negative or unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour to promote positive change and improve mental well-being.

Are sessions accessible for differently abled people?

From Autumn 2024 the office will be wheelchair accessible. For now, sessions take place online or in the surrounding Tamar Valley and Dartmoor National Park. Subtitles can be used for online sessions, as well as accessible routes for Walk and Talk/Nature therapy. Please get in touch to discuss any alterations to sessions that will make you feel comfortable.
